Text: “The Bad Guys”

Question: Do you believe there has ever existed a country in which every single person—man, woman, and child—deserved to die?

Unless you’re a racist asshole, the answer should be: “No.”

And yet some people really do think that way.  Just last Thanksgiving I had to sit and listen to my own father (who has never served in the military, by the way) shoot off at the mouth about how we “need to just kill all the Muslims.”

What’s worse is, a lot of people seem to feel that way.  To my deep shame, I had to sit there with my girlfriend and listen while members of my own family agreed with this horseshit.

As the only person in the room who’d actually been to the Middle East, met a great many Muslims and befriended a few, and served in our botched War On Terror, I felt I had a responsibility to speak up.  So I said a few things that should have been obvious.  How genocide is wrong.  How religious intolerance is wrong.  That almost all the people I met Over There were good, decent people who just want to live their lives in peace without getting bombs dropped on them, and that really doesn’t seem like too much to ask for.

The men grumbled, mentioned again that I’m the token Hippie of the family, and I think my Dad muttered something about how I must have picked up these crazy ideas in college or during my time living in San Francisco.  As if I’d said something utterly senseless and he had to find an excuse for my obvious wrongheadedness.  At this point my aunts rushed in to change the subject.

They’re very good at changing the subject.  To this day I haven’t been able to have an honest conversation about Iraq with my family.  Haven’t been able, or perhaps haven’t been allowed to.

Getting back to the point: I may have picked an extreme example, but the problem is that most Americans—and probably most people throughout the world—are raised to think this way.  When we send children to their history classes and teach them about past wars, we always describe those wars in terms of The Good Guys vs. The Bad Guys.  Us vs. Them.  But the world is far more complicated than that.  Unless, of course, you believe that every single German soldier killed in World War Two was a mass-murdering Nazi with no respect for human life.

Which isn’t true.  Your average German soldier was just another poor farm-boy, drafted into a madman’s war.

Those Soviet troops we were taught to fear during the Cold War?  Again, I’d bet most of them were just poor draftees.

How about the Indian Wars?  Remember cheering at the movies whenever John Wayne shot another red man?  Those Native Americans were just some young men defending their homeland.  Read Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee sometime.  If anyone was the “bad guy” in that situation, it was John Wayne for fuck’s sake.

I believe I can speak with some experience of your average “terrorist.”  He’s a guy living in the middle of nowhere.  He’s poorer than you can imagine.  He’s got kids to feed.  And one day some asshole with a bomb offers to pay him twenty dollars to dig a hole in the road.  Our “terrorist” knows the man who hired him will probably plant a bomb in that hole to kill Americans, but he needs the money, and he’s afraid what will happen to him if he says no, and he doesn’t like what these American soldiers have done to his country anyhow, so he takes the job.  Next thing he knows, he’s being tortured in Guantanamo Bay.

Does that poor man really sound like a homicidal maniac to you?  Do you think this “terrorist” deserves to die?  Yes, I understand that there are some genuinely awful men in the world who do terrible, inhuman things.  I’ve met a few of those guys, too.  But most of the “terrorists” I met were just poor bastards stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And if you can empathize with that “terrorist,” then what about your average law-abiding Iraqi citizen who just saw his home blown to pieces?  Does it really make any difference to him if the bomber was American or Al Quaeda?  Either way, his home is gone, and he’s got a right to be angry about that.  You can see how he might not be very happy with us.

I spoke of “terrorists,” but I can speak even more confidently of your average American soldier.  He’s a poor kid who’s been misled.  He’s been taught since earliest childhood that war is noble, that war is romantic, that war is Right, especially when America goes to war.  Your average American soldier is a child that has been brainwashed and handed a gun and turned loose in a hostile land.  He’s a good kid tricked into doing terrible things.

God forbid he should learn the error of his ways.  Soldiers who refuse orders have a way of disappearing.  Just look at Private Bradley Manning.  You can be sent to prison—military prison, where you’ll break big rocks into little rocks for the next few decades.  Politicians and the media will vilify you.  You’ll be ostracized by your fellow soldiers, your friends, even your own family.  You’ll be dishonorably discharged, and not even McDonald’s will hire you.  You’ll be branded a Traitor, the lowest form of human scum, and it would be better for you if you were born dead.  And it goes without saying that the war you protested will go on, bloody as ever, with or without your cooperation.

So, yeah.  I had my doubts about our War On Terror.  But I continued to follow orders until I finally (finally!) got an opportunity to leave active duty and go back home.  Perhaps some of you think that’s not enough, that I should have thrown down my rifle and my aid bag and martyred myself.  That my failure to do so makes me the Bad Guy.

And if that’s the way you feel, you need to grow the hell up.

If you’re so immature that you think of war in terms of The Good Guys vs. The Bad Guys, you’re likely to think that all Iraqis are bloodthirsty terrorists, or that all American soldiers are inhuman baby-killers.  And either way, you’re wrong.

We’re all adults here.  We should know better.

But apparently we don’t.  Just watch five minutes of Fox News and you’ll see highly paid pundits talking about war in terms of Us vs. Them.  Good and Evil.

Our political leaders talk this way, too.  Either they’re condescending to us, talking to us like we’re children, or they’re damn fool enough to think that way.  And we’re damn fool enough to elect them.

People who talk like that are far guiltier than your average enemy soldier.  It’s that sort of political language that dehumanizes people and allows us to kill thousands of people overseas and still sleep at night.

If you’re dumb enough to think that way, you need to shut the fuck up when grown folks are talking.

Text: Fuck Us and We Multiply… Unless We Go on a Sex Strike

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s talk of having a nationwide sex strike from April 28 - May 5.  Liberal Ladies Who Lunch are calling for the sex strike as a way to counter the recent political war on women.  With a catchy slogan, If our reproductive choices are denied so are yours, Liberal Ladies Who Lunch are hoping the sex strike will increase awareness that women and men benefit from contraception.

In today’s political climate, I understand the anger, passion, humor, and deviousness behind the strike.  After all, it was just the other week that the Democrat-controlled Senate narrowly defeated the Blunt Amendment, a proposed measure that would have allowed any employer to deny any health service based on any moral or religious objection.  Although the Blunt Amendment was worded broadly enough to exclude coverage of any health service, the amendment was introduced to counter the recent regulation that employers and insurers cover contraception without co-payment or cost-sharing.

States are even worse.  Across the country, conservative state lawmakers are introducing bills to either counter the recent contraception regulation or to just flat out deny access to contraception.  For instance, on Monday, the Arizona Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor a bill that would allow employers to both deny coverage of contraception based on religious objection and allow employers to inquire into whether employees are taking contraception for non-medical purposes.  Texas is moving forward with a plan to deny women vital health care services — rather than legally operate its Medicaid program and have a small fraction of money go toward Planned Parenthood — Texas will soon be without a Women’s Health Program.  And, of course, there was the whole transvaginal ultrasound nonsense in Virginia, which, although unrelated to contraception, is still a good example of the other anti-choice bills floating in state legislatures.

But is a sex strike really the best way to raise awareness of what is happening?  To be honest, I have yet to come to a conclusion.  While I flesh out my thoughts to reach a conclusion, here’s my take on the situation:

1. A sex strike proves the Right right.

“If these young women are being responsible and didn’t have the sex to begin with, we wouldn’t have this problem to begin with.”  This is what Chairman Davis of the New Hanover County Board in North Carolina said to justify his vote to reject a state grant that provides individuals with family planning services.  That’s right.  It’s those women. Those sluts, as Rush Limbaugh would put it.  Why can’t those women just keep an aspirin between their knees

Wouldn’t those withholding sex merely help the Right by proving that individuals who do not want to get pregnant can actually abstain from sex?

Instead, if we want to show that sex is something that is embraced by many and that pregnancy prevention is something men and women want to avoid, we should do the opposite of abstain.  We should go it like bunnies who have just come out of a long, cold winter.  Instead of a sex strike, what about a walk-out for a nooner campaign?  It would be a perfect way to say that we will continue having sex, and better highlight the fact that the Right’s campaign is anti-sex, anti-safe sex, and anti-relationship.

2. The sex strike further segregates men from the fight for equitable reproductive health care.

If the point of the sex strike is to bring men into the fold, doesn’t a sex strike continue to segregate the issue of family planning?  The sex strike reinforces the idea that family planning is only a woman’s issue (aka, “our access”) instead of articulating the argument that men and women are both responsible parties for ensuring that a pregnancy is planned.

3. The sex strike undermines women as active sexual beings.

Ok, so I get the idea behind the sex strike: women will withhold sex until men succumb to earthly passion and give in to all of their demands.  But this idea rests on women being passive actors in sex.  Men want sex, and women are there to be men’s vessels for desire.  This idea undermines the idea that women are sexual beings in and of themselves and declines to take into account that women may want to have sex.

4. I’m not convinced it will affect the primary audience.

Who is the audience here?  It’s not progressives who are already against these measures. And it’s not the conservative women who believe birth control, abortion, and sex before marriage are sins.  We’re looking at a fairly narrow audience: women who support at least some access to reproductive health care who happen to be in relationships with men who are either unaware of what is happening in the world or are perfectly fine with curtailing access to reproductive health care (aka, Republican lawmakers).  So far, I know of only one woman who fits that bill who had success withholding sex: the wife of Virginia State Delegate Albo.

I am sure there are lots of men out there who need a wake up call.  However, I am still not convinced that withholding sex will speak to that audience of men.  I need real evidence (aka, not just episodes of Step by Step) to show me whether withholding sex would actually change minds instead of harbor a greater resentment toward women.

5. The strategy is hetereonormative.

Not all women who use birth control are straight and sleeping with men.  Lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals use contraception too, sometimes to prevent pregnancy and sometimes to treat or prevent other medical conditions.  Let’s not completely ignore these populations and continue the myth that only straight women need comprehensive health care coverage.

Then again…

The sex strike is a damn good publicity campaign.  I can already see Rush Limbaugh digging himself into a bigger hole as he swears against the women who lead the strike.  Rachel Maddow will give some snark.  Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are bound to make fun of both sides.  Plus there will be blogs, tweets, facebook posts, and talking heads galore.  If nothing else, it’s a great way to keep the issue out there.

And, for those women who are upset about the state of things who happen to be sleeping with conservative men, this might be just the trick.  Perhaps men will be motivated enough to call their state lawmakers and tell them to knock it off already.

What do you think about a nationwide sex strike as a strategy to combat the attacks on reproductive health care?

Text: Planned Parenthood, Rick Santorum, Contraception and Assholes

You don’t want to get me started about the bullshit from “Catholics” or any man who says a thing about contraception. The only people who should be debating and making decisions on birth control are women. Birth control is anything but harmful. Any man who opens his damn mouth about birth control should have it wiped out with soap. It is just none of a man’s business. Contraceptives have always been covered under any insurance I have had, since I first could conceive, more years ago than I’d like to admit. That is nothing new. I am not talking “Obamacare;” I am talking about current, existing insurance policies.

Did you know that birth control is prescribed for gynecological problems unrelated to controlling birth? I was on birth control in high school for the endometriosis for which I finally had to have a total hysterectomy. I took my daughter to my OB/GYN while she was in high school, because she had killer cramps that were unbearable. Men don’t have to deal with cramps or pregnancy so they should have no say in women’s affairs.

And how many of these men have had vasectomies? I don’t know about your insurance back then, but now most insurance programs cover a vasectomy, and it usually is included in existing benefits. In such cases, the majority of the cost will be paid through the insurance. The out-of-pocket cost usually is only a small co-pay or deductible amount. Again, I am not talking about “Obamacare”; I am talking about current, existing insurance policies.

This is not only undemocratic and despicable, it is inhumane and a blatant attempt to deny human rights.

What is harmful to women is the bible thumping nut jobs such as Rick Santorum who think they have a right to control women. He’s against “freedom to do whatever you want to do without the responsibility that comes with that”…so what about men? Should they not be allowed to have sex at all, because they can just walk away from it with no responsibility? after all, they don’t have to carry a child for nine months, wake up puking every day, and spend every day for the rest of their lives caring for it. Santorum has eight kids, fine, but don’t expect everyone else to want that many kids or even be able to afford it. What is he suggesting, if you can’t afford having any more kids you should have a celibate marriage? That’s ridiculous.

Despite all Santorum’s talk that our nation’s and God’s laws must agree and that biblical truths are the basis for his views on social issues such as same-sex marriage, he assured us during last week’s CNN debate in Arizona that he does not intend to transform his religious beliefs into public policy: “Just because I’m talking about it doesn’t mean I want a government program to fix it.” Sorry, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t try to win conservative voters by telling them that the Bible — not our Constitution — is the standard our laws must agree with and then try to assure mainstream Americans that you don’t mean it. Santorum needs to come clean with the American people. Is his allegiance to the Bible or the Constitution? Will he publicly recognize there is a separation of church and state in America? Does he believe the United States does not have an official religion?

And the Catholic church needs to worry about their priests raping boys then sending the priest to another parish, rather than prosecuting them. Some of their previous popes were heinous men who had several concubines, and regularly had their enemies murdered.

I had two abortions at Planned Parenthood, and yes, they were for financial reasons. I couldn’t afford at the time to have a child. I made the responsible decision at the time that I must not have a child that I couldn’t afford to properly take care of. Thank God Planned Parenthood was there for me. By the way, my husband wanted me to abort my only daughter. But when I went to Planned Parenthood, they put me through strenuous, detailed discussions, and they determined that they wouldn’t abort her because, although my husband was O.K. with it, I really didn’t want to have that abortion. It was because of Planned Parenthood that I chose not to abort my only child.

I believe most Americans — including myself — suspect that a president’s faith could color his decisions on some level. But I hope that most Americans would, too, agree that a president’s religious beliefs should be subservient to our Constitution.

War is unhealthy for the planet, and sustaining our armed conflicts are draining a lot of the budget intended for things like education, health care, and other important social programs.  We could save a lot of money by getting our weaponry out of other countries
